It's not that the companies make computers that are any different form one another. they all buy their parts from the same manufactures, so the question is what company can you get what you want for the best price. Dell, Toshiba, HP, Sony, are all main compettitors that cut corners to make a profit. the smaller companies that offer highend quality but with budget pricing in mind is Asus and Fujitsu. Both are the manufacturers that produce many of the parts the big name companies sell and give you their hgiher end products at a better price.
I will reccomend a few good choices for you.
This Asus model comes with 4 gb of ram a 320 gb hard drive, a sperate graphics card and a good dual core cpu for under $800, it will do everyhting you need.

If you really just want to use a lightweight computer for work, school and home interneting, try looking at a netbook. they are smaller, but powerful. you would want to upgrade the ram but this can be done for $20. The one I reccomend is really the cream of the crop for the price. others sell cheaper, but they won't have windows XP or be as upgradable, or have the great customer support ASUS offers.

It is a $389 netbook and comes with all the bells and wistles you would need for siple computing and loaidng music. Plus the batter life is betwen 7-9.5 hours. this is a fun little machine. I own one and couldn't be happier.
In today's world, we don't need to have 10 lb computer replacements to do most of the suff you do with our laptops. When wa the last time you used your laptop to burn a cd? if you spend 90% of your time surfing the web and downloading itunes, then the asus Eee pc is your best bet.
Good luck!

IMHO, no one company is better than any other, esp considering your stated requirements. But I hate Sony. I've had to work on them and they've always been a big pain in the behind. Any of those are fine, as well as Acer.
Sorry if this sounds like a non-answer but as long as you're getting a good deal, I wouldn't be too worried about weighing brands in general. However I would physically look at the laptops and see if you feel good about it asthetically. If you can afford it, get a Core2 instead of a Pentium or atom. Also there's sound - some have better built-in speakers than others. Bring some MP3's you like on a thumb drive and test them out if you can.

There is really no BEST laptop brand from ANY company as these manufacturers all have produced "Gold" and "Lemons" in their time.
Most answers will tell you to buy "THIS" or "THAT" brand because it is the best, just remember that it is the best for THEM not for you.
Most people will tell you of a best "brand" but their actual answer is based on the MODEL they have not the entire brand and you should not judge a company by ONE model as they make hundreds of them.
This being said, here is how to do more precise research to find the best one for YOU:
The first step is to get information on the laptops that you are interested in and, as a second step, to search online at web stores (like Amazon or similar) or at retail shops (BestBuy, staples or similar) for the best deals on the ones you would really like to have based on your search.
This way, you get the best working laptops at the best prices.
As laptop specs change often, it is good to get non-vendor/non-partisan/non-groupie information so you should do some checking on these review/guide sites to help fine tune your search.
At each site, start by checking models and then compare them with others (or against each other) by choosing different options using boxes and drop down menus to customize the search and get what you want in your laptop ( there is even a way on some of those sites to look by inputting the price you are willing to pay to minimize the impact on your wallet ).
Your time will not be wasted (after all, you get all this from the comfort of your home) and you should find something to your liking and budget.

Good luck on your research.
P.S.: By the way, I own a Dell
but it's an older model (2002) on the way out soon (to be replaced by a still unknown brand as I will be doing research).

If quality is considered Mac would be on top. But if you are low in budget, Acer and Dell are also fine.
