Aachen University is setting up an elite school in Oman’s capital, Muscat. Its founders hope that within a few years, the German University of Technology will attract thousands of students. The first courses in engineering and urban planning opened this autumn. The project is being financed by an investor from Oman - with German directors responsible for the content. It’s part of an effort by Gulf states to invest in education to reduce dependency on oil exports and prepare the population for new careers. And German know-how is in demand. Young women in the region are particularly interested since their families often forbid them from studying in other countries, where they require a chaperone. So the German university is a tremendous opportunity for them.
